Our guest speaker in class today discussed the use and consequences of social media and technology in education. Prior to this class, I had knowledge of the effects of one’s social media presence but, I did not fully understand how significant digital identity is. Technology is part of almost everyone’s life at this point in time. Rather than trying to fight it, educators such as myself need to find positive ways of incorporating it into our lives and the classroom.

“We need technology in every classroom and in every student and teacher’s hand, because it is the pen and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience much of our world.” – David Warlick

It is necessary to have an open dialogue with your students about their concerns and create solutions, while also following school expectations and policies.

When it comes to social media for employers it is important to keep in mind the professional role you must uphold and the consequences of not maintaining a professional state. The biggest takeaway from our discussion was the idea of digital consent and being wary of crossing lines.
